Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy

Brown & Newirth Ltd believes Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is about understanding the business' impact on the wider world and how we can leverage this impact in a positive way.

CIBJO (World Jewellery Confederation) President Dr Gaetano Cavalieri speaking at the 3rd International Gem and Jewellery Conference in Bangkok, Thailand, December 12, 2012…

“When we talk about Corporate Social Responsibility it is essential to qualify exactly those to whom we are responsible. I would define three main groups:

  1. Our business community which includes all the executives and employees along the entire length of the chain of distribution, from the mine through to the jewellery retailer.
  2. Our consumers who buy jewellery for its beauty, heritage and its ability to express human emotion, and who rely on us to protect its value and reputation.
  3. Our stakeholders who include the millions of individuals living in the countries and regions around the world in which the trade is active, and for whom we represent a resource for sustainable economic and social development.

To be responsible corporate citizens in the modern jewellery business, we must follow three basic rules of practice:

  1. To defend the industry from the various challenges that could threaten our reputation and integrity;
  2. To function as a positive influence, serving as a means for sustainable economic and social development in the communities and countries in which we are active; and
  3. To be fully transparent in the way we operate our businesses and in what we sell.”

In terms of what CSR will mean to Brown & Newirth, it is essentially an umbrella term to encapsulate how we impact and engage with (i) employees, (ii) the community, (iii) suppliers, (i) the environment.

Brown & Newirth undertakes significant activities in these areas. We follow a four-pillar policy that can be seen below.

  • We value our Employees Brown & Newirth is an inclusive organisation committed to fairness, equality of opportunity and diversity in all its employment practices, policies and procedures. We are committed to ensuring we have a healthy and educated workforce whose views are listened to and respected. We nurture ambition and ensure that all employees can develop relevant skills and knowledge to enrich their contribution and carve their own career path.
  • We value our Community We are committed to building mutually supportive relationships with the wider community including national and local concerns. At Brown & Newirth we are actively involved in charitable giving and encourage our staff to engage in this process.
  • We value our Suppliers We have committed to ensure that all our suppliers have good business ethics and meet the standards we hold in high esteem. We aim to develop relationships built on shared trust and communal responsibility.
  • We value our Environment We have committed to ensure that we reduce our environmental impact and continue to improve our environmental performance as an integral part of our business strategy and operating methods. We also run apprenticeship programs and workshop tours to support the development of our future jewellers in partnership with the following two organisations:

Environmental Commitments

We have a team of people at our head office Elma House, Hatfield who are active in finding even more ways to reduce our environmental impact. We currently recycle all products to ensure landfill disposal is kept to a minimum.

Charity and volunteering

We focus on raising funds for these chosen charities. In addition to ad hoc donations from staff, funds are raised through various events held throughout the year, and staff members are invited to take up voluntary work for the chosen charity. Members of staff also raise money through sponsorship for various sporting events.
